How American diplomatic agents consider German politicians, Part II: Angela Merkel

In this entry, I mainly focus on how the American embassy considers Angela Merkel's personality, her behaviour and her attitudes.

Through the release of the American cables, the publicity could get insights concerning the relationship within the different political parties, because the American embassy recorded every political discussion in the Bundestag and every conflict about foreign issues. And they also recorded every intrigues between the German politicians. An example which illustrates that is the conversation between the minister of defence Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg and the American ambassador Murphy on February 3rd, in which zu Guttenberg criticizes Westerwelle's decision behind his back, because zu Guttenberg expected greater engagement in Afghanistan with a higher amount of militarian troops. But Westerwelle definitely refused to support zu Guttenberg's point of view so that he describes the mission in Afghanistan as a failed mission.

After having recorded all the German discussions and disputes about German political issues, the American embassy send these documents to Washington. Maybe America has a more complex and detailled overview about the different conflicts and disputes than German politicians.

But now, let's talk about Angela Merkel and how the Americans regard our German Chancellor. The American cables revealed that Merkel is very sensible and rational. If she comes under pressure, Merkel reacts insistently, avoids risk and frequently she doesn't have creative suggestions in order to solve international problems. Moreover the American cables revealed that Merkel is renowned for her reluctance so that she is called "Angela Teflon Merkel" which also illustrates her strong and persistent personality. If she makes a decision, she becomes very active and energetically. These attitudes became obvious when she found out that General Motors didn't sell Opel, according to their announcements. Merkel was appalled by this horrible information. The consequence was that she reacted so sourly that she even refused to answer Fritz Hendersen's phone call.

If you evaluate these characteristic features of Chancellor Angela Merkel, you find out that the Americans especially emphasize her strength and her perseverance in political conversations. But I discovered that the American embassy also mentions negative attitudes towards her. The image of teflon not only symbolizes her persistence, but also her static and therefore conservative point of view concerning international issues, because apparently she is mainly focused on German interests instead of a global perception. Another interesting thing which I found out is Merkel's relationship to Barack Obama, which should very reserved and very formal, although Obama has such a friendly and positive appearance that the audicity thought their relationship would be more intensive. This is another criticism towards Angela Merkel, because her relationship to Bush was obviously closer.
