During his term in office, Italy’s Premier Silvio Berlusconi is well-known in Germany for his numerous sex scandals, family problems, financial worries and his large amount of generous parties. That’s the reason why he is often considered as a doubtful and dubious politician.
Apparently, the Americans have nearly the same perception. The American cables revealed that David Thorne who is an American ambassador met Berlusconi on New Year’s Day. He declared that Berlusconi left a chipped and tarnished impression which could have been a signal for overfatigue because of his excessive parties. But indeed, he was marked by a mentally ill man who had beaten him with statue in his face. During the meeting, Berlusconi didn’t show any abnormal behaviour, the sole exception was Wladimir Putin’s phone call. After having received this important phone call, Berlusconi broke up the meeting immediately.
According to the American cables, the relationship between Italy’s Premier Silvio Berlusconi and Russia’s Premier Wladimir Putin is very personal and private. American diplomatic agents also observed that Putin visited him with his family several times in Lombardy.
Therefore the Americans developed some conspiracy-theories which have not been confirmed. One theory is that Berlusconi pursue different economic interests so that he could be engaged in Russian pipeline-business. That would also explain why he so often visits his close partner in Russia, as well. But as just said, this is just an assumption and the sources for all these assertions are opaque.
In my opinion, it becomes obvious that America takes this issue very seriously; they necessarily attempt to reveal the reasons why they have such a close relationship to each other. That’s way they sent embassies to Moscow and Rome in order to inquire their special relationship. It is absolutely necessary that you behave very carefully, because who knows what they have in mind?
