The excitement about the power of the so-called “hacker community” is remarkable. Anonymous Internet activists made waves with their digital attacks against global companies such as Amazon, PayPal or Mastercard. So, thousands of people expressed their solidarity towards Assange who is currently on remand. Most of the young activists don’t necessarily pursue the same goals. Some hack to prove that there are vulnerabilities. Others fight for an uncensored and free network in which all data can be viewed with total transparency. And the remaining people simply intend to damage the global companies in order to show them who actually has the power of the internet. But so far, these actions have only caused a foreseeable economic harm.

Since early November, the young Internet activists have caused uproar on the web. However, the actions and movements of these hackers gradually become calmer. Since mid-January, the media and the press rarely report on any Internet movements.

Maybe it is possible that the Internet movements disappear just as quickly as they are turned up. But this is just a presumption which is still unconfirmed. If so, do the young hackers form once again to launch other network attacks? I also have some concerns that the Internet attacks could not only turn against the billion-dollar companies, but also against certain individuals.

I think that the American cables only reveal partially new information, because in my opinion one has already heard some things, or could anticipate certain behavior patterns of important politicians. So I already knew that foreign minister Westerwelle is still inexperienced, Chancellor Angela Merkel can react vigorously and persistently in order to defend her point of view and Berlusconi pursues secret and economic abroad, especially in Russia. On the other hand, the U.S. cables indicate interesting information about the current war situation in the Middle East and certain war policies, for instance, Iran and how to control and stop their nuclear arms.

I don’t think it is right to speak out for total transparency on the web. If you consider the example of Julian Assange, we can see an absolute contradiction. On the one hand, he demands data transparency on the Internet, and on the other hand, he wants to avoid at all costs that his investigation file will be published. That’s kind of strange behaviour. But this strange behavior apparently indicates the character of Julian Assange, he seems to be a contradictory character.

But what he would say if his files of the enquiry were published in the Internet? Would the world be better if we knew what it says? No, I don’ think so.
